Jose Mourinho's most successful spell in English football was built around a 4-2-3-1 formation and it was unsurprising that he reverted to his favoured system on Saturday.

In his first stint at Chelsea, Claude Makelele and Michael Essien operated as screens in front of a back four, with Arjen Robben, Damien Duff and Joe Cole wreaking havoc behind Dider Drogba.
